Thursday, March 20, 2008; Sports Winning is not the most important thing in sports and there are a few reasons why I feel it should be so. Playing a sport should be about enjoying the game and about winning it. If we allow our focus to shift, and pursue the win all the time, as time passes the wins and losses that we have been so caught up with have caused us to forget just the pure enjoyment of playing the sport. This should be one of the most important things we should keep in mind. When playing a sport, the spirit of sportsmanship should also be of utmost importance. A man can pride himself in his win but if that win was achieved through underhand means there is no basis for that pride. The satisfaction of winning through ill gotten means can never be compared to that of winning knowing that you have tried your best. Just to quote a phrase from a song, “to look beyond the glory is the hardest part, for hero’s strength is measured by his heart.” A win is not a win unless tried your best to achieve that win. The willingness to learn from our failures is also another key factor is sports that we should not overlook. Only in failure can we progress further and reach greater heights. A failure is just as important as victory. Failure can motivate us to push ourselves to go the extra mile drives us towards our goals, while victory is only the result of our hard work. While we rejoice in victory, we should not detest failure as it shows us the path towards victory. A quote from Albert Schweitzer, “Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful”, Bryan Tan 27/08 i screamed at
