Is winning important in sports?

Would sportsmen want to lose after putting in so much effort? The answer is no. But ultimately, whether winning is important in sports is much dependent on how one views it. You may lose the competition but one the other perspective you may end up “winning” after putting up a beautiful battle with your opponent exceeding your capabilities.

Being able to win in sports, sportsmen are motivated thus achieving higher level of success. Ultimately, sportsmen join competition for one purpose and that is to win. No one would want to enter a competition to lose. Not just that, winning an international competition would bring glory and fame to the sportsmen and to their country as well. In this case sportsmen are internationally recognized. This will further enhance their careers as sportsmen. Furthermore, winning helps to boast one’s self esteem. Thus with higher self esteem, they will have more confidence in themselves.

However viewing this matter in other perspective, winning is not ultimately everything. In each and every competition, there will be only one winner. And sometimes you may just happen lose by few points. Even if they happen to lose, they will be able to gain experience and motivate themselves to improve. If one keeps winning, he will be arrogant and his standard will be stagnant. To be strong sportsmen, one should be able to handle wins and loses. Ultimately, one would not keep winning. And through the defeats, one should learn from his mistakes and keep improving so that next competition he can perform well. Performing at the fullest potential and giving our best and more make us winners.

In conclusion, sportsmen should aim to win but in the end whether they end up wining or not winning is not necessarily very important in sports
