Is winning important in sports?
Personally, I think that winning is not very important in sports and it should not be of the top priority. First of all, I think that fairness and good ethical character should be emphasized more in sports games. Nobody likes to be cheated and be called names. Foul play and breaking of rules should not be tolerated. Some athletes, for example the NBA players, have resorted to taking steroids so that they can win the game. Fortunately, the tests were strict enough and they were banned from playing. What is the purpose of winning if you have actually cheated everyone including yourself to win? The true meaning of sports would be undermined by foul play, thus I feel that to really enjoy the sport and make everyone a winner, fairness and good ethical character should be emphasized in sports games. Moreover, the idea of winning actually depends on your own perspective of the word. For example, lets say that you were playing a soccer match against another team. You and yr team played the best you could and all of you felt that you played the best game of your lives. However, your team has lost. You could choose to see that since everyone has performed brilliantly so you all can be considered winners, or you could just look at the final score of the match and determine that your teams are the losers. It is all about how you look at it. The final outcome is not important. I remember there was a quote by Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. saying that ‘Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome. Not everyone can be Number 1’. The process is more important and therefore, if you have placed in effort and tried your best you are already a winner. Furthermore, building valuable friendship and teamwork through playing the sport should be of foremost significance too. For example, the world cup has pulled people of different countries together to play against each other. The players work together as a team to strive to win. Next, another example would that the US and the world embrace the athletes of NBA who had earlier been described as ’’too black’’ to succeed. This shows that sports is not all about winning but has more essential values such as improving relations among different races and countries. In conclusion, striving your best to win should be your objective but it should not undermine your principles and rules of the game. There are more important things like having fun and making close friends.Winning is important but not as important as playing fair and abiding the rules. As long as you put in the best effort, the final outcome is not important. Choy Zhi Jian 27/08 Labels: Zhi Jian 27/08
