Friday, March 21, 2008; Winning important in sports? Whether or not winning is important is dependent on the individual or group engaging in that particular sport. For example, a win is everything to a professional athlete whereas to an amateur or sports enthusiast it is merely a negligible perk of enjoying that sport. However, even as the importance of winning a sport to an individual is a variable, the process of winning and the ability to do so is vital in sports. Sports is competitive in essence, without differentiating the winning and losing party, one would not be engaging in any sport. One would be engaging in an activity with a goal other than to win. Even in a participation of a recreational sporting event, if either party does not aim to win, the event would go no where. Sports is all about differentiating the parties physical prowess. If this is not so, it would be called a game instead of sports. The world of professional sports is also sometimes muddled with politics and business in form of advertisements or political statements. As such, it becomes very much like the not so pretty commercial and political world - a dog eat dog society. For example, the Olympics was created in the 1980s mainly to help solve financial problems as opposed to creating an avenue for professional athletes to showcase their skills. Therefore, with so much commercial and political tie-ins in the world of professional sports, a win becomes extremely important. A win could result in something as desirable as world wide recognition and honor, as with the case of Cathy Freeman. Conversely, a loss could result in repercussions as devastating as losing one's job. Thus, the impact of a win in the case of professional sports is cosmic and important.
