Do you agree with a boycott of the Olympics?

Topic: sports
Issue:A ban of the olympics
Context: present
Keywords:Boycott-refuse to take part
Stand: Yes/no, DEpends on situation

View: No
Point: THis may lead to further bilateral relations problems and worsern the relationship between them.
Elaborate:BY boycotting the Olympics, you are damaging the host's national pride publicily by not showing respect and would increase tension between countries.
Evidence:Refusal to compete when it was held in Helsinki by the communist country
Evaluation: therefore, it is better to stop the boycott such that there would be at least some respect for each other's country.
Link: It should not be agreed as it will lead to further problems with other countries.

Do you agree with a boycott of the Olympics?

Topic: OlympicsIssue: Relationship between politics and sports

Context: Present

Keywords: Agree, Boycott, the, Olympics. but not just any, it has to be politically justified.

Point:The Olympics was created for sportsmen and not for politicians, thus politicians should have no say in the running of the
Olympics.

Elaboration: The Olympics is an international platform for the atheletes that train day in and out and such a boycott would ruin all the hardwork
an athelete devotes into his training. Atheletes are the ones that train and are affected most by the olympics thus, they should be
the ones deciding on whether they should participate or not and not their nations.

Evidence: The current Prime Minister of Taiwan's threat to boycott China's olympic games may well ruin it's nations athelete's
future, as such there is currect dissent in Taiwan's sports community.

Evaluation: A boycott of the Olympics should not be left to the hands of politicians but to the atheletes who would obviously want
to continue their participation.

Link: Thus boycotting the Olympics something that the atheletes would not want and thus should not be carried out.

Do you agree with a boycott of the Olympics?

Question analysis on :''Do you agree with a boycott of the Olympics?''
Topic: Sports
Issue: Whether there should be a boycott of the Olympics
Context: Present, countries involved in olympics
Keywords: Boycott --> To abstain from or act together in abstaining from dealing with as an expression of protest.
Stand: No.

Topic Sentence 1: I feel that there should not be a boycott of the olympics because i feel that politics should not be mixed with the Olympics.

Topic Sentence 2: The Olympics should not be boycotted. It would strain relations with China, which is a growing superpower. China cannnot be boycotted.

Topic Sentence 3: A boycott of the olympics will result in athletes missing out on their opportunities to compete in an Olympics which they trained hard for. Olympics is only held every four years.

Topic Sentence 4: If a boycott is declared, it will cost activists whatever ongoing leverage they have over China.

Point: The Olympics should not be boycotted. It would strain relations with China, which is a growing superpower. Today, China cannot be boycotted.
Elaboration: By boycotting the Olympics, it also means you are boycotting China, a growing superpower. This will inevitably anger China because China takes pride in hosting the Olympics. Today, China can no longer be ignored due to its large role in the world.
Evidence: The world needs China to help solve diplomatic crises from North Korea to Sudan, to power the ailing global economy and to help bring stability to its neighbourhood. There are many products that are also made from China, one of the world's largest producer.
Evaluation: Due to the large role that China now plays on the world, (the economy and the stability of countries), a boycott of the olympics will certainly strain relations with China and thus affecting not just a single country but the whole world.
Link: Therefore, the olympics should not be boycotted as we cannot afford to ignore China.

Olympics

Do you agree with a boycott of the Olympics?

Topic: Olympics
Issue: Boycott of the Olympics
Context: Present
Keywords: Boycott, Olympics
Stand: No, the Olympics should not be boycotted

Point:
The Olympics is THE stage for athletes from all nations show off their skills and the achievements which they have made in training for this special event. A boycott would mean depriving athletes the chance to make a name for themselves.

Elaboration:
Athletes train for long periods of time so as to make it to this rare sports occasion held only once every four years. A boycott of the Olympics is not only insulting to the host nation but as a result relations between these countries will be further strained and the hopes and dreams of the athletes who have waited for this opportunity will be crushed.

Evidence: The Moscow Olympics boycott was led by the United States followed by 64 other countries in protest of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. While a boycott of the Olympics does not have lasting impacts of that country, it is a selfish act by the government as ultimately the athletes are the ones who suffer.

Evaluation: A boycott of the Olympics is not the way to go, it does not achieve its aim of solving any existing problems, at the end of the day neither parties benefit from such a decision.

Link: Thus boycotting the Olympics is a selfish and unwise decision to make.

Question analysis on the massmedia

Should the press be completely free?
Topic: The mass media
Issue: Whether the press should be COMPLETELY free.
Context: Present, Anywhere
Keywords: Press -------> can be newspaper, magazines, television, radio, internet, flyers.
COMPLETELY FREE ----> Freedom of speech , no censorship,
not being under government jurisdication and no need pay money.
Stand: No, depending on certain criterias. ( under accurate control of government )

Topic sentence 1: The press should not be completely free because it will allow people with harmful intentions to propogate their ideas.

Topic sentence 2: Furthermore, although people should have the right to exercise the freedom of speech, but making it completely free will allow materials such as religious/racists attacks on certain group of people.

Topic sentence 3: If the press is made completely free, it might potray scences or pictures of violence, this will undoubtly promote violence in the world.

Topic sentence 4: Moreover, the press should not be made completely free as this will mean that the people can create anti-government feelings and thus this may cause instability and riots may break out, but it should be free to publicise accurately what the government is doing.

Topic sentence 5: Finally, it should not be made completely free, but to allow comments to continue. And the government should act as the moderator to block any comments that are hurtful, stupid or mean.

Paragraph
Chosen topic sentence: The press should not be completely free because it will allow people with harmful intentions to propogate their ideas. For example, a person who dislikes a certain race or a group of people may desire to post comments in their blog that may insult and downgrade the character of the person. Moreover, websites are free to post whatever they want to and thus, some websites tend to exaggerate about a person and is often biased towards him/her. If the government does not control the press, they might tend to exaggerate about facts so that they can attract readers, but they do not have any idea what they might have caused. Thus i feel that the press should not be made completely free as this may cause instability and riots. I feel that with accurate government control and some freedom in press, is the best compromise.

Is the environment suffering?

Yes, i agree. The environment has been one of the victims of modernisation and selfish ambitions. Temperatures has been very extreme(very hot weathers and cold weathers) due to the pollution we have caused. We have been contributing to the rate of release of carbon dioxide and harmful gases thus hastening Global warming. To add on, we have been deforesting many forests and there are insufficient number of trees to maintain the gasous equilibrium thus resulting to the change in environment. Populations have reached a record high and there are alot of industrilisation thus releasing alot of waste gases into the atmosphere thus cahnging our climate. The environment has been also affected in many aspects like the quality of water. There has been alot of water pollution due to human negligence thus damaging the life of water creatures anddamaging our environmet. THus i conclude that the environment is suffering.

Seriously, our environment is suffering. Look at the chart above. Around Year 2000, there is dramatic sharp increase in the global temperatures. All these years, global temperatures keep increasing. With these increased global temperatures, there is a high possibility it can cause global warming whereby heat are trapped in the atmosphere. Also, ice caps at the North and South pole are melting due to that reason, which lead to the rise in the sea level. Due to the increase in global temperatures, Earth is said to be "unstable" in the sense that a lot of strange and weird stuffs are happening. Example : unstable weather. One day would be snowing next day it is bright and sunny. Due to the unstable weather, it had a great impact on the agriculture sector. Those crops that require a specific temperature to grow would find it difficult to survive. And have you wonder why scientists keep stressing that impacts of global warming is REAL!! Because if we do not do something to it, our next generation would suffer . Look at the things around you. Since the improvement of technology and modernisation, people are cutting more trees and care less for the environment. Also people are releasing more and more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the environment which trap heat in the atmosphere. So man's actions are really the cause of all environmental problems and seriously man should really reflect their actions. But I am glad that some countries are working hand-in-hand to solve the problems.

Is the environment suffering?

Yes. I feel that the environment has undergone much ‘suffering’ after all these years. There have been issues for deforestation of many forests in Southeast Asia and Brazil. Rainforests are being burnt down to clear land for growing of the energy crops also known as biofuels, which act as a source of replacement for fossil fuels. This causes destruction of the environment. Furthermore, it also causes desertification of land. Thus, it will be made unsuitable for growth of plants and also the habitats of animals will be destroyed. Moreover, due to the increasing global population, there is an increase in demand for food, thus it leads another problem; overgrazing. To cope with growing food demand, the farmers grow more cattles and having too many causes overgrazing. This destroys the fertility of the soil and makes it useless.
There is also another problem that has been with us for quite some time. That is global warming. Due to deforestation, there has been a rise in the amount of carbon dioxide. Moreover, nitrogen monoxide is released from vehicles contributed to global warming as well. Global warming causes melting of polar ice caps and thus destroys the environment of the polar bears. This also causes flooding of low-lying areas and thus further reducing the availability of land. The increase in heat also may endanger the lives of animals and eventually cause them to be extinct.
To add on, there is also a serious problem of water pollution. Oil spillage and also waste being dumped by industries into the sea has contributed to water pollution. Water pollution causes many deaths of marine life forms. To make it worse, it pollutes the water; making it unsuitable for recreational activities such as surfing, wake boarding and many other water sports.
In conclusion, I feel that the environment is suffering. Precious land is being destroyed and forests burnt. Next, there are also serious cases of pollution. Thus, I feel that the environment is degrading and suffering.

Environmental Degradation

One of the ill effects of modernisation is environmental degradation. This issue has always been present but in recent years has become a serious issue faced not by one nation but the nations of the world.
Such a serious problem exists mainly because many countries in the world have made economic development and progress one of their top priorities. Resources are needed to fuel the economies of these nations and also to support its development. Hence resources are being used at a non sustainable rate which results in the destruction of the environment.
One of the problems faced by environmentalists and ecologists is the destruction of the world’s forests. Forests cover about 30 per cent of the world’s total land area. During the 1990s, the world lost about 14.6 million hectares of forest. 94 million hectares of forest was lost over a ten-year period. It represented about 2 per cent of the world’s total forest cover, or an area larger than Venezuela.
Most deforestation occurred in natural tropical forests, which lost 14.2 million hectares a year over the last decade as these forest contained many hardwood trees which are valued by many industries worldwide.
Dr. Edward O. Wilson of Harvard University estimates that if 1% of the world's tropical rain forests are destroyed each year—a conservative estimate based on current rates of deforestation—then over 100 years there would be a loss of at least 20% of all species, assuming extinction rates remain constant. Based on a total of 10 million species, the current annual loss has been calculated to be 20,000 to 30,000 species.
Humans not only threaten the existences of other species we put ourselves at risk as well. With the current rate at which oil is being extracted, the world’s oil reserves will be depleted in 40-50years.
As such the human race is self destructing, just as we required the resources the earth provides to sustain ourselves we also have a responsibility to protect the earth to ensure that the resources is provides can last us for a long time.
